Goalkeeper Melanie Hopkins Named Rookie and Goalkeeper of the Week
LOWELL (Nov. 2, 2010) – The No. 2 UMass Lowell field hockey team earned another pair of victories this week, breaking its program record with 17-straight wins. For her efforts in the milestone, senior forward Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, Mass.) was named Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week, while Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) was once again named Rookie and Goalkeeper of the Week.
Macy tallied seven points during the two-game stretch (3g, 1a), including five points against Franklin Pierce on Saturday, scoring the game-winner in the weekend tilt. She also tallied an insurance goal in the 4-0 victory over No. 6 Stonehill on Wednesday.
Macy has notched a conference-best 23 goals on the year and has amassed 202 career points through this weekend’s contest, as she nears the top of the all-time NCAA DII Field Hockey record books.
This is Macy’s third Player of the Week honor this season, as she was tabbed the conference’s best on Sept. 7 and 13 to open the season.
Macy, a criminal justice major, is one of two children of Doug and Mary Macy of Tewksbury, Mass.
Hopkins was named Goalkeeper and Rookie of the Week, as the honors are familiar territory for her. She has been honored as Goalkeeper of the Week four previous times and has been honored as Rookie of the Week three times this season.
The netminder was put to the test this week, making 12 saves and allowing just one goal on the week. She first shut out No. 6 Stonehill, making nine stops in the victory and then earned a 6-1 victory over Franklin Pierce.
Despite allowing her first goal in eight games, she helped her squad set the program record for consecutive shutout minutes at 606:48.
Hopkins, a Biology major, is one of two children of Julie Ann Hopkins of Harwich and John Hopkins, Sr. of Wakefield, Mass.
The River Hawks will play their final road game of the regular season tonight, heading to Waltham, Mass. to take on the Bentley Falcons at 7:00 p.m. The teams last met on Oct. 14, when UMass Lowell earned a 2-0 victory.
