Javelinas Drop Home Opener

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team dropped their home opener on Tuesday night to St. Edward’s, 56-53 at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.  It was the first meeting for the two teams since a Javelina 72-71 victory in 1998.

In the first half, both teams struggled to score as they combined to go 1-for-21 from three-point range.  The Hilltoppers (2-0) took a 19-18 lead into halftime while neither team had a player score more than five points.

In the second half, each team picked up the pace offensively.  The Javelinas (0-2) fell behind by six points with 12:26 left in the half, but Adam Morris (Goliad/Goliad HS) keyed a nice comeback scoring six points in less than two minutes to give the team a 36-35 lead with 10:21 to play.

The game went back-and-forth until Shimeek Johnson hit a three-pointer for the Hilltoppers with 1:05 left to give them a 51-49 lead.  A Hoggie turnover quickly gave the ball back to St. Ed’s and they converted on a lay-up by Remy Boswell with 28 seconds left.

The Javelinas pulled to within one point with four seconds left, but could get no closer.

The Javelinas finished the game shooting 40 percent from the field, but were only 3-for-21 from three-point range.  Senior Antwan Mullins (Katy/Cinco Ranch HS) led the team with 14 points, three assists and two steals.  Morris added 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting in only 18 minutes.  Junior Marcus Ford (Colorado Springs, CO/Mesa Ridge HS) added nine points, a career high 14 rebounds and three blocks.

The Hilltoppers had three players score in double figures.  Boswell had 12 points and nine rebounds while Johnson added 11 points and five boards.  Cameron Couball scored 10 points and had four steals off the bench.

The Hilltoppers had a decided advantage on the boards grabbing 16 more rebounds than the Javelinas.  They outscored the Javelinas by 11 points on second chance opportunities.

The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Texas Lutheran.
