Hounds Fall to Mountain Lions in Overtime to Conclude Colorado Road Trip

DURANGO, COLO.. —  The Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team (2-2) used a 15-5 run over the final 2:30 of regulation to force an overtime period, but dropped an 80-76 overtime decision to University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, Saturday afternoon at the Whalen Athletic Center. The contest marked the first overtime game for ENMU since a 61-58 win over West Texas A&M last February.

The Mountain Lions controlled the early going, building a 22-15 lead with 6:21 left in the opening half, before Max Carrier (Jr., F, Canyon, Lake, Calif./Irvine Valley CC) hit a pair of free throws to ignite an 11-1 Greyhound run, capped by him hitting two more free throws to give Eastern a 26-23 lead with 3:30 left in the half. The teams traded baskets down the stretch, with the Hounds taking a 29-28 edge into the locker room.

After Aaron Edwards (Jr., F, Long Beach, Calif./San Bernardino Valley College) completed a Greyhound fast break early in the second half to extend the ENMU lead to 31-28, the Mountain Lions put together a 17-3 run over the ensuing 6:11 to seize a 45-34 lead. After an exchange of baskets, the Hounds faced a 62-52 deficit with 2:49 left in regulation, when Stefan Mirabal’s (Jr., G, Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) three-point bucket ignited a 17-6 Greyhound run, giving Eastern a 69-68 edge on a Victor Reid (Sr., F, El Paso, Texas/Cochise CC) jumper with 4:04 left in regulation. Neither team managed to score over the final 4:04 of the half.

The Mountain Lions opened the overtime session on an 8-1 run, taking a 76-70 lead with 1:17 left. ENMU closed out the period with a 6-4 run, capped by a Mirabal trey.

Although rebounding was just 45-43 in Eastern’s favor. The Hounds dominated the offensive glass by a 20-4 margin. The advantage was converted into a10-2 edge for ENMU in second-chance points. Mirabal paced ENMU with 20 points and six rebounds, while Carrier finished with 19 points, 13 boards and three steals for his first double double. Reid finished with five points and a career-high six assists. Brent Jones paced UCCS with 16 points.

The Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team will return to action next Saturday, for “Fan Appreciation Day,” when they host Lubbock Christian. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. MST. Fans will be admitted free of charge and are encouraged to bring canned food to donate to the Food Bank.
