Hoggard Runs Wild on Marauders

Clarion, Pa. - Led by Alfonso Hoggard's 211 rushing yards and three touchdowns, Clarion defeated visiting Millersville 49-10 Saturday in the season finale.

Clarion (4-7) gashed Millersville (2-9) for 343 yards on the ground. Hoggard averaged 9.6 yards per carry and scored on runs of 53 and 64 in the first nine minutes of the first quarter as the Golden Eagles built a 14-0 lead. Quarterback Ben Fiscus also added 104 more yards on 13 carries and scored twice.

Fiscus completed only 6-of-13 passes for 96 yards and only two receivers caught passes. But the ground game's 7.3 yards per carry and six touchdowns did more than enough.

Millersville was out-gained 450-242 in total offense and Millersville managed only four net rushing yards as quarterback Bill Shirk (Phoenixville/Phoenixville) was sacked seven times for a loss of 54 yards. Shirk was an accurate 23-of-29 for 238 yards but threw two interceptions and lost a fumble.

Millersville had its opportunities. It drove into Clarion territory on its first five drives of the game and came away with only three points. Four of the drives ended with a turnover.

The Marauders' only touchdown came early in the fourth quarter when Shirk hooked up with Jamal Smith (Camp Hill/Trinity) from 12 yards out for Smith's 12th receiving touchdown of the season--one shy of tying the school record which is held by Sean Scott (1997) and Mike McFetridge (1998). Smith finished with 67 yards on six catches, capping one of the best seasons by a receiver in school history.

His 1,184 yards ranks second all-time behind Scott's 1,246. His 1,685 all-purpose yards is the third-best single season total in school history. Smith completed his Millersville career third in receiving touchdowns with 24, third in receiving yards (2,361), fourth in all-purpose yards (4,223) and sixth in scoring (198).

The heir apparent to Smith's No. 1 receiver position, Dominic Sanders (Washington, D.C./Paul VI Catholic) caught a career-high six passes for 67 yards Saturday.

Shirk also completed his career among Millersville's all-time passing leaders. His 6,126 passing yards is fourth-most all-time. He also ranks fifth in career touchdown passes with 46 and fourth in total offense with 6,216.

Shane Gross (Pottsgrove/Pottsgrove) led Millersville on defense with nine tackles and a sack. It was his team-leading fourth sack of the season.
