Hawai‘i Hilo’s Hurley named PacWest Player of Year

Dominican (CA) rookie Seluia Falelili captures Freshman of the Year award

PHOENIX, AZ – Hawai‘i Hilo junior middle blocker Hillary-Lucy Hurley (Anderson, CA/Enterprise) has been selected the 2010 Pacific West Conference Player of the Year, while Dominican (CA) rookie outside hitter Seluia Falelili (Long Beach, CA/Otay Ranch) has been chosen the PacWest Freshman of the Year during a vote by the head coaches in the conference.

The 2010 Newcomer of the Year award was given to Hawai‘i Hilo junior OH Rachel Thornquist (Crystal Lake, CO/Crystal Lake Central), while the Libero of the Year belonged to Hawai‘i Pacific junior Kyra Pelayo (San Jose, CA/Saint Francis).

The PacWest conference media office in Phoenix, AZ, announced the All-PacWest Volleyball Team and top individual awards on Tuesday, Nov. 16, during the conference’s weekly Internet broadcast PacWest Magazine, The Radio Show. The nine head coaches of the league selected the squad which features 21 players evenly distributed over three teams – First, Second and Honorable Mention.

In addition, BYU-Hawaii mentor Wilfred Navalta was named the PacWest Coach of the Year for leading the Seasiders to a share of the conference title and a berth in the NCAA II National Championship Tournament. As the eighth seed in the tourney, BYU-Hawaii (16-7/13-3 PacWest) will face host and #1 seed Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the opening round of the eight-team regional.

Hurley earned the Player of the Year award and was named All-PacWest First Team for the second time in her career. She previously earned the honor in 2007 when she also was the PacWest Freshman of the Year.

This season Hurley is leading the PacWest in points (5.25) and kills (4.71) per game, totaling 404.5 points on 363 kills, 15 aces, seven block solos and 39 block assists. She is second in total points and total kills, one of just two players to break the 400-point plateau, and one of three who have more than 350 kills.

Thornquist had an outstanding campaign in 2010 for the Vulcans and is currently ranked third in the league in hitting with a .299 average. In 76 games, she has 173 kills and 41 errors in 442 attempts. She also is among the league leaders in blocks, ranking sixth with a 1.00 per-game mark. She has 76 blocks on six solos and 70 assists.

Pelayo’s defense was outstanding in 2010 for the Sea Warriors. She leads the conference in digs per game with a 6.72 mark, while her 598 total digs is second in the league. In addition to being named Libero of the Year, Pelayo was selected All-PacWest First Team. She was an Honorable Mention last season.

Even though Dominican (CA) finished the year 0-16 in the PacWest and 3-26 overall, Falealili made an impression on the coaches. The Freshman of the Year is currently fifth in the PacWest in points per game (3.54) and fourth in kills per game (3.14). She totaled 329.5 points on 292 kills, 22 aces, seven block solos and 17 block assists.

In addition to Hurley, the Hawai‘i Hilo women’s volleyball team picked up three other All-PacWest selections this season. Senior Opposite/OH Kawena Cubi-Otineru (Haleiwa, HI/St. Francis) and senior setter Katie Swenson (Bellevue, NE/Omaha Gross Catholic) were named to the Second Team for the second consecutive year, while senior OH Leilani Ramsey (Milton, WA/Fife) earned Honorable Mention.

Cubi-Otineru is currently ninth in the PacWest in hitting with a .257 mark. She has 219 kills in 517 attempts with 86 errors. She also is seventh in kills per game (2.96) and in points per game (3.38). She has 250 points this season that includes her 219 kills, as well as her 17 aces, 24 block assists, two block solos.

Swenson is the assist leader in the conference, averaging 10.82 per game. She is the lone player in double-figures, while her total of 833 assists is third in the PacWest. Last season, Swenson was tabbed as the PacWest Newcomer of the Year.

In 70 sets this year, Ramsey has 181 kills, 17 aces, 205 digs and 211.5 points. She averages 3.02 points per game.

HPU also produced four All-PacWest selections this year. In addition to Pelayo, senior MH Kelly Balanay (San Diego, CA/Valhalla) earned her fourth straight All-PacWest First Team selection, while junior OH Natasha Bell (Sunnyvale, CA/The Kings Academy) claimed Second Team honors and sophomore setter Pihana Kea (Honolulu, HI/Punahou) was named Honorable Mention.

Balanay is presently second in hitting in the PacWest and one of just two players over the .300 mark. She boasts a .312 average after recording 263 kills in 609 attempts with just 73 errors. She also is ranked ninth in kills per game (2.89), fourth in points per contest (3.58), and fourth in blocks per game (1.02). She has amassed 326 points by combining her 263 kills with 72 block assists, 21 block solos and six service aces.

Bell put together a solid season in 2010 thanks to her 296 points on 256 kills, 30 aces, four block solos and dozen block assists. She is eighth in the PacWest in points per game (3.36) and eighth in kills per game (2.91), while her 0.34 aces-per-game average has her ranked third in the league.

Kea put together an outstanding season of setting up her teammates. She has amassed the second-most assists in the league to date (857) and ranks second in assists per game (9.97).

BYU-Hawaii also produced a quartet of All-PacWest selections this season. Junior OH Losaline Faka‘osi (Salt Lake City, UT/Highland) and sophomore OH Lauren Hagemeyer (Ridgway, CO/Ridgway) each were named to the First Team, while Second Team accolades went to senior libero Nobuko Kotoyori (Kanagawa, Japan). Senior setter Lauren Miller (Boise, ID/Centennial) was named Honorable Mention.
Faka‘osi and Hagemeyer enter the NCAA II post-season as the one-two punch for BYU-Hawaii. Hagemeyer is currently ranked fifth in the PacWest in kills per game (3.02), just ahead of Faka‘osi who is sixth at 3.01.

Hagemeyer is sixth in points per game (3.50) and has totaled 294 points on 254 kills, four aces, three block solos and 66 blocks assists. Faka‘osi is ninth in scoring in the league with a 3.34 points-per-game mark. She has accrued 284 points on 256 kills, nine aces, three block solos and 32 block assists.

Defensively, Faka‘osi has totaled 338 digs and ranks eighth in digs per game (3.98) in the conference. This marks her second straight All-PacWest First Team selection after garnering the same honor in 2009.

Kotoyori had been outstanding on defense after totaling 443 digs. She is currently fourth in the PacWest in digs per game (5.21) and is seventh in aces per contest (0.31). She has 26 service aces in 86 games.

Miller is presently ranked seventh in the PacWest in assists per game (7.62) after compiling 564 in 74 sets.

Dixie State and Academy of Art each wound up with three All-PacWest selections in 2010. The Red Storm earned a pair of All-PacWest Second Team picks in sophomore MH Madisyn Fitzgerald (Mesa, AZ/Mountain View) and sophomore OH Brita Noble (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville).

Fitzgerald led Dixie State in hitting with a .276 average. She is currently ranked sixth in the PacWest after posting 231 kills in 587 attempts with 69 errors. She also is ranked 10th in scoring with her 3.28 points-per-game average, and stands third in blocks per game after averaging 1.03 per contest.

Fitzgerald amassed 314.5 points this season on her 231 kills, 28 aces, 12 block solos and 87 blocks assists.

Noble is in the Top 10 in the league in both aces per game and digs per contest. She has 29 service aces in 91 sets for a 0.32 per-game mark. She ranks fifth in aces per game and is 10th in digs per game (3.69) after producing 3.69 per contest. She finished her year with 336 digs.

Dixie State junior libero/defensive specialist Jayci Jeffress (Brighton, CO/Brighton) claimed Honorable Mention for the second straight season. This year she finished her season with 537 kills and a 5.54 per-game average, good enough to currently stand third in the PacWest.

Academy of Art earned a repeat All-PacWest First Team member in senior OH Dan Yang (Beijng, China), while sophomore setter Melissa Cheng (Sunnyvale, CA/Homestead) claimed Second Team accolades and junior MB Amy Bush (Yucaipa, CA/Yucaipa) earned Honorable Mention.

Yang is currently ranked third in the PacWest in points per game (4.58) and in kills per game (4.17). She is the lone PacWest player with 400 kills and leads the conference in total points with 440 on the 400 kills, 15 aces, five block solos and 40 blocks assists.

Cheng is presently third in assists per game (9.73) and leads the league in total assists with 992, while Bush tops the PacWest in hitting (.352). She has 189 kills on 398 attempts with only 49 errors.

Chaminade senior setter Tatiana Alvino (Brentwood, CA/Liberty) finished her season with 761 assists in 83 sets, averaging 9.17 assists per game. She is currently fourth in the PacWest in assist average.

Grand Canyon sophomore setter Kristen Preach (Phoenix, AZ/Xavier Prep), the 2009 Freshman of the Year, picked up an Honorable Mention for the Antelopes this season. She is sixth in assists per game (8.51) and fourth in total assists with 825.

Notre Dame de Namur earned one All-PacWest selection in junior OH Christina Villamayor (Poway, CA/Poway).

Villamayor, who was an Honorable Mention in 2008 and 2009, jumped to the First Team this year following a stellar campaign. She is presently ranked second in the conference in kills per game (4.17) and third in overall kills with 359.

As a server, Villamayor averaged 0.31 service aces per game to stand sixth in the league, while on defense she produced 322 digs and a per game rate of 3.74 that has her ranked ninth.

Overall, Villamayor has amassed the third-most points in the conference (395.5) on 363 kills, 15 aces, seven block solos and 39 block assists.
