(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women’s Basketball team travels to Fargo, N.D. tonight to take on the NDSU Bison in exhibition action. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from the Bison Sports Arena.
The Golden Eagles will be led this season by senior Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and sophomore Brittany Wiese (G, 5-7, SO, Albertville, Minn.). Zelinsky started all 27 games and finished the season with a team-high 16.4 points/game average, good for third in the NSIC. She scored her 1,000th point on December 20 against Dickinson State and moved into second place all-time in scoring at the University of Minnesota, Crookston with 1,302 points. Zelinsky led the team in field goals made with 161 and in rebounds with 146. She dished out a team-high 70 assists and blocked a team-high 17 shots and was named to the NSIC All-Conference Second Team. Wiese had a very strong freshman season. She started in 22 of the 27 games played and was third on the team in scoring, averaging 11.2 points/game. She was second on the team with 109 field goals made, second in steals with 35 and third on the team in assists with 58 and was named to the NSIC All-Freshmen Team.
North Dakota State is led by junior Katie Birkel who started all 29 games last season for the Bison. She averaged a team-high 12.4 points per game. She led NDSU in steals with 73, assists with 75 and was fourth on the squad with 119 rebounds.
Minnesota, Crookston returns to the court on Friday, November 5 when they travel to UND to play the Sioux in another exhibition game. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. UMC closes out the exhibition season on Sunday, November 7 as the Golden Eagles travel to the University of Minnesota to take on Coach Roysland’s daughter Kelly who is an assistant with the Gophers. Game time for the final exhibition game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
