GCU Picked Second; Carroll Named All-PWC

Grand Canyon was picked to finish second in the Pacific West Conference preseason poll, released at PacWest Media Day Wednesday.

In a poll of conference coaches, GCU had 70 points, including one first-place vote. GCU finished fourth in the conference last season.

BYU-Hawai'i, the defending PacWest champs, earned 73 points and five first place votes. GCU was followed by Chaminade (65/1), Dixie State (60/1), Hawai'i at Hilo (46), Dominican (35), Hawai'i Pacific (26), Notre Dame de Namur (20) and Academy of Art (10).

Sophomore guard Brad Carroll (Chandler, Ariz., Corona del Sol, Milwaukee) was one of seven selections to the preseason all-conference team. Carroll averaged 9.0 points per game as a freshman and a team-best 11.4 points in conference contests. He led the team in free-throw percentage (80.9), steals (1.1) and minutes played (32.7) and was named second-team All-Pacific West Conference.

BYU-Hawai'i junior point guard Jet Chang was named the Preseason Player of the Year. Others named to the preseason squad were, Chaminade guard Steven Bennett, Dominican guard Austin Bryan, Hawai'i at Hilo forward Justin Smith, BYU-Hawai'i's Marques Whippy and Dixie State forward Tom Whitehead.

Grand Canyon continues its exhibition play Friday at Utah State. The regular season opens Nov. 12 at Utah. The home portion of the schedule starts Nov. 19 at Antelope Gymnasium against Minnesota-Duluth.
