MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Getting four scorers in double-figures, the Georgia College men’s basketball team (3-2) beat the University of West Florida (1-3) 72-60 Friday night at the UM Coca-Cola Classic, hosted by the University of Montevallo. The win stops a two-game slide.
Senior forward Reece Wiedeman (Suwanee, Ga.) hit for a team-high 15 points with six boards to lead the way for the ‘Cats. Ryan Legates (Marietta, Ga.), Jared Holmes (Indianapolis) and Nate Hamilton (Snellville, Ga.) each added 10 points to the cause. For the sophomore Hamilton, it was a career-high.
The Bobcats led nearly throughout, taking the lead for good at the 11:09 mark in the first half on a Holmes jumper for a 16-14 score.
Senior guard Andre Mikell (Snellville, Ga.) ran the offense well in his first start this season, scoring nine points with five assists, turning it over just twice.
The Bobcats were out-shot 47 percent (21-45) to 37 percent (22-59), but they made up for it with an 18-8 advantage on the offensive glass and by causing more turnovers than they gave up (17-13).
The Argos’ Jamar Moore led all scorers with 19 points, but got little help. No other UWF player had more than seven points.
The Bobcats led at the half by six 36-30, and pulled away in the second stanza on free throws, hitting 17 of their 19 in the second half.
The win gives head coach Terry Sellers 499 in his career as a collegiate head coach (499-248).
Georgia College will face the University of North Alabama Saturday, Nov. 27 at 5 p.m. eastern in day two of the UM Coca-Cola Classic.
