Weber State pulled away in the second half en route to 57-38 victory
OGDEN, Utah - Playing in its only preseason exhibition game on Monday night the Adams State women's basketball team trailed Weber State (Utah) by just seven points at halftime, but the Wildcats pulled away during the second half at the Dee Events Center to top the Grizzlies, 57-38.
The Division II Grizzlies, who will begin their season with a pair of games in Hawai'i on Saturday and Sunday, were on the court against different colored uniforms for the first time since opening practice in October, while Weber State was playing its second exhibition contest after facing Mary (S.D.) on Saturday.
Picked as the preseason Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) team to beat, the Grizzlies outshot the Wildcats from the field hitting of 17-of-48 (35.4 per cent) compared to 19-of-54 (35.2 per cent). But Weber State found its way to the free throw line often and made the most of its chances, scoring 16 points from the line to the Grizzlies one.
The Grizzlies were led by senior guard Vera Jo Bustos (Las Vegas, N.M.), the RMAC Preseason Women's Player of the Year, who was held below her 2009-10 season average, scoring 11 points on 5-of-13 shooting and grabbing four rebounds. Sophomore guard Marissa Peterson (Santa Fe, N.M.) was 4-of-6 from the field and connected on her lone 3-point attempt of the game, giving her nine points in the game, well above her average of 3.0 points per game from last season.
With 11 minutes and 15 seconds left to play in the opening half, the Grizzlies held a five point lead following a layup from sophomore Chloe Ray (Arvada, Colo.) to go up 12-7, but the Wildcats went on a 22-10 run to end the period and enter the break with 29-22 lead.
The Wildcats had a pair of double-digit scorers, as guard Megan Patterson led all scorers with 19 points and forward Caitlin Anderson tallied another 15 for the home team, seven coming on free throws.
ASC was nearly even with Weber State in rebounds, but the Wildcats led the way in offensive boards, 12-7, and managed 15 second-chance points.
Following a close opening frame, the second half belonged to the Wildcats. Ten of their second half points came from the stripe, and the Grizzlies missed all three of its free throw attempts during the final 20 minutes.
Junior Briana Benjamin (Queen Creek, Ariz.) scored five points in 12 minutes in her ASC debut. Senior Kendra Coveal (Albuquerque, N.M.) led the Grizzlies on the boards, corralling nine of the Grizzlies' 34 rebounds.
Adams State is now Hawai'i bound as the Grizzlies will open the 2010-11 season on the road in Honolulu, facing Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday and Chaminade (Hawai'i) on Sunday. Saturday's action tips off at 5 p.m. MDT, and Sunday's game will get underway at 3 p.m. MDT.
