ABILENE, TEXAS – Overall, the Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s cross country team struggled on Saturday at the 2010 Lone Star Conference championships finishing in 10th place, but junior Kiya Dandena (Houston/Bellaire HS) was outstanding in earning all-Lone Star Conference honors for the first time.
Dandena posted a career best time over 8 kilometers to finish in fifth place overall. He crossed the tape in 24:45.96 and in the process he defeated his season’s nemesis, Tarleton State’s Westyn Rosiles. Rosiles had beaten Dandena in each of the final two races of the season, but Dandena was 12 seconds faster today.
Host Abilene Christian won their 20th consecutive title by placing three runners in the top 10, including individual champion Amos Sang. Sang easily won the race by 39 seconds in a time of 23:49.50.
The top 10 individuals were recognized as with all-Lone Star Conference honors. Sang led the way and was then followed by Mohamed Noor (Eastern New Mexico), Cleophas Tanui (ACU), Julius Korir (Cameron), Dandena, Romain Rybicki (ACU), Rosiles, Cody Hughes (A&M-Commerce), Daniel Kiptoo (East Central) and Armando Saldivar (ECU).
The team standings were as follows: Abilene Christian (54 points), Eastern New Mexico (68), East Central (90), Cameron (109), A&M-Commerce (124), Incarnate Word (164), Tarleton State (178), West Texas A&M (190), Angelo State (216) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (241).
