ABILENE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s cross country team finished in eighth place among 13 teams at the Lone Star Conference Cross Country Championships hosted by Abilene Christian University on Saturday.
The Javelinas, competing with all freshmen and sophomores, improved upon the last few years’ conference finishes despite not having any runners finish higher than 30th. The race was initially supposed to be 6 kilometers, but a wrong turn by the driver in the gator ahead of the pack shortened the race to 4.5 kilometers.
The Javelinas packed their top five finishers within 26 seconds and 14 places of each other. Freshman Brianna Villarreal (La Feria/La Feria HS) was the top finisher on the squad covering the distance in 17:51.31 to take 30th. She out kicked teammate Marissa Acosta (Alice/Alice HS) who finished less than a second behind in 31st place. Another freshman, Ashley Nunez (Kingsville/H.M King HS) was nipping at their heels in 34th place and crossed the line in 17:57.26. Tezna Roy (Palacios/Palacios HS) and Rowena Trevino (San Diego/San Diego HS) finished in 38th and 45th, respectively for the team.
