WESTERN FALLS 91-69 IN FIRST MIAA ROAD CONTEST

EMPORIA, Kan. – The Missouri Western men’s basketball team trailed from start to finish against the Emporia State Hornets falling 91-69 on the road in Emporia. Jonathan Phelps tied the record for most three’s in a game with eight scoring a career high 31 points. Western falls to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in MIAA action.

The first period started slowly for Western as the Hornets jumped out to an early 11-1 lead. Western responded going on an 11-3 run, cutting the lead to two at 14-12 after a James Harvey dunk. The Hornets extended its lead to 11 at 30-19 after a three pointer by Xavier Burnett with 7:28 to play in the half. The two teams played even the rest of the way as the Hornets took the 44-33 halftime lead.

Western shot 42.9-percent (12-28) from the field and 37.5-percent (6-16) from long range. Havey led the way with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting while Phelps dumped in 11 points. Western had just 14 rebounds in the frame.

The Hornets made 7-of-9 free throw attempts and made 15-of-34 field goals with seven threes. Jarvis Nichols led the way with 12 points while Burnette had 11. ESU had 24 rebounds with eight on the offensive end.

Harvey cut the Hornet led to eight after a three point shot to open the second half. From there it was all ESU as they extended the lead to as many as 22 after a free throw by Jordan Stout with 7:26 to play. Western did not get any closer than 16 the rest of the way as the Hornets improve to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in MIAA play.

Western shot 42.6-percent (23-54) from the field and made 13-of-30 long range shots. The Griffons had just 28 rebounds and five steals on the night. Harvey finished with 16 points while TJ Johnson pitched in 10.

The Hornets shot 55.9-percent (33-59) from the field and sank 12-of-26 long range shots. The Hornets connected on 13-of-17 free throw attempts and had 22 assists in the ball game. Burnett led the way with 19 points while Michael Tyler, Nicholas and Robert Moores dumped in 16, 16 and 13 points respectively. Burnette led all players with nine rebounds.

The Griffons will return to action on Wednesday, December 8 when they travel to Joplin, Mo. to take on the Missouri Southern Lions from Leggett and Platt Athletic Center in for its second straight MIAA contest. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
