WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Bentley University women’s basketball team, coming off a 19-11 season, has received the number 24 ranking in the USA Today/ESPN Division II preseason top 25, which was selected by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
It’s the second national recognition the Falcons have received this fall. Previously, they were selected tenth in the Women’s Division II Bulletin preseason rankings.
Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame coach Barbara Stevens, seven victories away from reaching the 800 milestone, has eight players back from last year’s team, including standout guard Kim Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley HS). Last winter, the first-team All-Conference selection was second in the NE-10 in scoring (17.4 ppg), third in assists (4.6 average) and among the conference leaders in both three-point shooting and free throw percentage.
In addition to having six of last year’s top seven scorers back, Stevens has bolstered her roster with the return of sophomore guard Courtney Finn (Winthrop/Winthrop HS) from injury, the transfer of sophomore forward Caleigh Crowell (Harwich/Worcester Academy) from the College of Charleston and the addition of a promising recruiting class.
Bentley is one of two Northeast-10 teams in the top 25, with defending champion Franklin Pierce receiving the number 14 ranking.
Bentley will play an exhibition game at the University of New Hampshire on Monday and will open Stevens’ 25th season at the helm Nov. 15 at fifth-ranked Holy Family University.
