The fourth-seeded Belmont Abbey men's soccer team and the fifth-seeded Pfeiffer Falcons battled to a 0-0 draw in the quarterfinal round of the 2010 Conference Carolinas Tournament, but the Falcons will advance by virtue of a 2-1 win in penalty kicks. The match goes down as a draw, as Pfeiffer moves to 4-7-5 and will advance to face the winner of the Lees-McRae/Queens match, while the Abbey ends its season with a record of 10-6-3.
The Abbey won the statistical battle, outshooting Pfeiffer 21-13 and holding a 10-3 edge in corner kicks, but Falcons goaltender Alex Moreno stopped nine Abbey shots, including a penalty kick in the second half. He would later make three more saves in the shootout.
Belmont Abbey had its best chance to score in the 81st minute as Timmi Borges DaSilva was pulled down in the penalty area, but Moreno blocked the Aaron Weldon penalty kick.
The Abbey had one final chance to end the match in the second overtime, as Stuart Kirk let fly a shot with two seconds left, from 25 yards out, that Moreno tipped over the bar.
In the shootout, the Abbey drew first and the shot by Jose Penaloza was saved. Pfeiffer's Nick Brindley found the back of the net on his attempt to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. After a miss by Matt Dolan, Moreno and Abbey goalkeeper Louis Liberatore made combined to save the next three shots.
Gianluca D'Agata beat Moreno to knot the shootout at one, and Fahret Salihovic gave the Falcons a 2-1 lead. Needing a succesful kick to keep the shootout going, Moreno blocked Stuart Kirk to give the Falcons a 2-1 shootout win.
