Manchester, N.H. (November 17) -- Led by a 26-point effort from senior All-American candidate Thomas Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.), the Saint Anselm men's basketball team rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to defeat Southern New Hampshire, 64-49, on Wednesday night.
Southern New Hampshire never trailed over the opening 20 minutes and built an early 10-4 edge after a three from Josh Morgan-Green (Upper Marlboro, Md.) with 15:09 left in the first half. Saint Anselm closed to within two at 24-22 with under four minutes left on a jumper from Baudinet before the Penmen closed on a 7-4 run for the 31-26 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Hawks pulled close yet again and took their first lead of the game with 10:50 left on a pair of Baudinet free throws for the 41-40 edge. Saint Anselm turned that into a quick 46-40 lead with just under nine minutes remaining, forcing a Penmen timeout. A Penmen three-pointer cut the lead back down to three before five unanswered points by Jack Keough (Owego, N.Y.) put Saint Anselm out in front by a 51-44 margin with 6:32 left. The teams traded baskets before Baudinet brought the near-capacity crowd to its feet with a dunk off a turnover with 4:35 left to make it 55-49 Hawks. Saint Anselm closed the game on a 9-0 run from that point to come away with the 15-point victory.
Baudinet led the Hawks with 26 points, including 19 in the second half as he surpassed the 1,400-point mark in the victory and now has 1,411 points. Keough added his second double-double of the season with a 12-point, 10-rebound effort. Nikola Canic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Greg DeSantis (Trumbull, Conn.) led the Penmen with eight points each.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Northeast-10, while the Penmen are now 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the league. Saint Anselm is back in action on Tuesday night as the Hawks travel to Bentley University to take on the Falcons in a 7:30 p.m. start in Waltham.
