Bankers Classic MVP Bustos leads Grizzlies in blowout victory

ASC good for 15 3-pointers, 30 assists in win over Cameron on Saturday

ALAMOSA, Colo. - Senior guard Vera Jo Bustos (Las Vegas, N.M.) took home tournament MVP honors at the 2010 Adams State Bankers Classic for the second straight year after scoring 24 points and tying her career-high with six 3-pointers in a Grizzly rout of Cameron (Okla.) University at Plachy Hall on Saturday evening by a final score of 88-57.

The Grizzlies (3-1) drained 12 3-point baskets in the first half en-route to 15 triples in the game, the most in available single-game school history that dates back to the 1997-98 season. Twenty-two of Bustos' points came in the first half and helped propel the Grizzlies to a 58-27 lead before entering the locker room.

With the win, the Grizzlies concluded their weekend with a 2-0 record, and won both games by an average of 33 points.

Bustos did everything for the Grizzlies against the Aggies, adding seven rebounds, six assists, two blocks and four steals as well.

Also earning all-tournament team honors for the Grizzlies was junior Briana Benjamin (Queen Creek, Ariz.), who scored a dozen points for Adams State on Saturday, all coming from beyond the arc.

Bustos averaged 15 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 3 steals and a block over two games. Benjamin, who led the Grizzlies with 17 points in their 82-47 Friday win over Northern New Mexico, averaged 14.5 points 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists.

Sophomore Jamonica Hudgins (Las Cruces, N.M.) set the tone for the first half, draining a 3-pointer for the game's first bucket. The Aggies would come back with seven unanswered, but then the Grizzlies got hot.

The Grizzlies answered with 22 straight points, including 15 from Bustos who hit four straight 3-point attempts, giving ASC a 25-7 advantage with 11:05 remaining in the half.

Junior Kelsie Kruger (Alamosa, Colo.), who would end the game with 14 points, accounted for nine in the first half on 4 of 5 shooting.

As a team Adams State hit on 33 of 61 attempts from the field (54.1 percent) and recorded 30 assists to tie the program's available single-game record, failing to record a helper on just three baskets. Hudgins dished out eight of the Grizzlies' assists, while senior Kendra Coveal (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Bustos were each good for six.

Cameron's Josie Stewart, also an all-tournament team selection, helped pace the Aggies attack with 12 points. But a 35.8 (28.8) percent night from the floor just was not enough for Cameron to overcome the sharp-shooting Grizzlies.

The Aggies pressured the Grizzlies in the second half, forcing 19 of ASC's 24 turnovers after the intermission and equalling the Grizzlies' 30 second-half points, but the 31-point halftime deficit was far too much to overcome.

Adams State's bench continued to look strong, and after putting up 47 points on Friday outscored the Aggies bench 35-18.

In other women's action at the 2010 Adams State Bankers Classic on Saturday, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) rival Western State equaled the Grizzlies' 2-0 weekend record with a 65-27 win over Northern New Mexico. All-tournament team selections Kate Hall and Brooke Pendergraft led the Mountaineers with 18 and 16 points, respectively, while Hall also added 13 rebounds in the effort. The Eagles' own all-tournament team member Aujaney Chandler led NNMU with a double-double, scoring 10 while grabbing as many rebounds.

The NAIA Division II Eagles were able to shoot just 16.4 percent (9-55) from the field and were held to a 12.5 percent (3-24) effort in the second half.

The all-tournament teams were announced following the final Adams State women's game on Saturday evening, and before the start of the ASC men's game to conclude the 2010 Adams State Bankers Classic, a presentation was held to recognize Alamosa State Bank, First Southwest Bank, San Luis Valley Federal Bank and the Alamosa Convention and Visitors Bureau, the weekend's sponsors.

The Adams State women will return to action in Pueblo, Colo. this Friday and Saturday at the Colorado State-Pueblo Chuck Stephens Classic. The Grizzlies will open their weekend against 16th-ranked Drury (Mo.) University at 5 p.m. Friday and will square off against the NCAA Division III University of Dubuque (Iowa) Spartans at the same time Saturday.

In their last 11 games against ranked Division II opponents the Grizzlies are winless, last facing a ranked team in the first round of the NCAA Division II Central Regional Tournament on March 12, where ASC fell to No. 21 Concordia-St.Paul (Minn.), 87-59. The Grizzlies last win in Pueblo was during the Chuck Stephens Classic on Dec. 6, 2008, when Adams State topped the University of the Southwest (N.M.) 73-61 to finish the weekend 2-0.

Fans who can not make it to Pueblo during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend can catch all the action live straight from the mouth of Bryant Johnson, the "Voice of the Grizzlies," on KSPK-FM (104.1 in Alamosa) or at www.kspk.com.
