Argos Place Seventh, Gartin Second
GULF SHORES, Ala. – In its final tournament of the fall season, the No. 18 West Florida women’s golf team held its own in a field of all Division I competition, placing seventh at the UAB Fall Beach Blast at Peninsula Club in Gulf Shores, Ala. on Tuesday. The Argonauts carded 323 in the final round, led by a stellar finish by junior Jennifer Gartin (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Daytona State).
Gartin shot a 74 in Monday’s first round, and she improved on that with a 70 in the final round on Tuesday, finishing in second place and just one stroke behind individual champion Marissa Steen of Memphis. Gartin’s 70 was her best single round score in her first year as an Argonaut, and it was one stroke shy of the school record. It also marked one of just four single rounds at 70 or better in UWF women’s golf history.
Junior Jenny Lines (Birmingham, Ala./Spring Hill), the holder of the UWF single round record with a 69 last season, finished this tournament tied for 21st. Lines shot an 82 in the second round, finishing at 159 after a 77 yesterday. Senior Bhavna Shetty (Mysore, India/Sadvidya HS) started well on Monday with a 74, but she struggled to an 87 on Tuesday, finishing tied for 27th.
Freshman Jaime Jordan (Niceville, Fla./Niceville HS) finished tied for 42nd (88-84-172), and she was followed in the UWF lineup by sophomore Agustina Cocha (Salta, Argentina/Colegio Santa Maria) who finished in 48th place (89-91-180).
Finally, freshmen Hillary Miller (Greensburg, Ind./Greensburg Community HS) and Alexandria Fox (Brandon, Fla./Brandon Senior HS) competed as individuals; Miller finished tied for 46th, and Fox in 49th.
The Argonauts will return to action in the spring and look to win a sixth straight Gulf South Conference championship. For information on all UWF Athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
