#24 Falcons Open Season with Win over Carver Bible, 78-53

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The 24th-ranked University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (1-0) opened up the 2010-11 season with a 78-53 victory over Carver Bible College (0-4). UM was led by junior Miles Beatty (Newark, N.J./St. Anthony's) who had 17 points including two shots from three-point range. Senior Ronald Severtsgaard (East Moline, Ill./United Township) controlled the post with 16 points and nine boards off of 7-of-10 shooting.

Junior DeMarcus Catchings (Arlington, Texas/Arlington) scored 13 points and grabbed seven boards. Catchings provided the biggest highlight of the game late in the first half as he drove the basket and threw down a tomahawk dunk in traffic. He shot 6-of-9 from the floor and led the team with a pair of blocks.

Sophomore Jonas Brown (Tifton, Ga./Tift County) added seven points and seven boards as he was 3-of-5 from the floor. He also had a team-high three steals. Senior Cecil Coleman (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Bay Tech) also added seven boards and six points.

The Falcons began the game with a 13-0 run and never looked back as they led by double-digits the rest of the game. Seven of the Falcons first 13 points came from Beatty who opened the game with a three pointer. UM led by as much as 25 points in the first half but entered the half with a 50-28 lead.

The Cougars never got with in 20 points of the Falcons in the second half but UM was not able to build much more of a lead as the game ended with the Falcons up 78-53.

The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Nov. 20 at 3 p.m. as they host Anderson University for a non-conference match-up.
