2010-11 Felician College Men’s Basketball Outlook

The 2009-10 Felician College men’s basketball season was the greatest in program history. Under first-year head coach David DeFerrari, the Golden Falcons won a school-record 24 games, earned their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship, and made the athletic department’s first NCAA Tournament appearance.

As the team gets ready for 2010-11, DeFerrari must now prepare his squad to handle high expectations, both internally and externally. Felician returns four starters and nine veterans, and has received national mention by at least two publications.

“I keep preaching that last year was last year – it has no bearing on this year,” DeFerrari said. “It’s harder to win a championship, but it’s even harder to repeat; the element of surprise is gone, and teams will be gunning for you. We have to guard against the buzz of high expectations from filling our heads and get back to work. The process now starts all over again. We don’t get to pick up where we left off last year.”

The graduation of 6-foot-7 Ethan Kennedy and the transfer of 6-foot-6 Andrew August will leave Felician with a smaller squad. To compensate, the Golden Falcons will look to use their depth, speed, and athleticism at the guard and small forward spots.

“Some guys will have to play larger roles than last year, and others may have to play positions they’re not used to,” DeFerrari said. “That’s all part of what successful teams do. Our goal right now is the same as last year – just get better every day. Having said that, what last year does do for us is give us confidence that if we take care of our business, there’s reason to believe that we’ll again be in the thick of things come playoff time.”

GUARDS: Junior Antoine Obery (31 GP, 15.5 ppg, 9.6 rpg, 4.5 apg, .542 FG% in 2009-10) had a breakout sophomore campaign, making the top 10 in the CACC in scoring, rebounds, and assists and earning second-team all-league honors. Seniors C.T. Williams (25 GP, 1.2 ppg, 2.2 rpg) and Ryan Moseley (31 GP, 3.6 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 33 blocks) are experienced, defensive-minded point guards who are expected to split time.

Sophomore Anthony D. Green (23 GP, 1.0 ppg, 0.5 rpg) looks for an increased role. Transfer Jimmy Schmitt and freshman Owen Barnes will be expected to provide quality minutes as situational substitutes.
WINGS: Senior captain Devon Young (31 GP, 17.4 ppg, 4.8 rpg, .531 FG%) is a two-time all-CACC selection, and will continue to be the focal point of opposing defenses. Senior swingman Mike Edghill (30 GP, 2.9 ppg, 0.9 rpg) is a valuable defensive stopper and spot shooter.

POSTS: Senior Suquan Gary (31 GP, 10.0 ppg, 4.2 rpg, .523 FG%) is a returning starter at power forward, and classmate Kashiff Foster (31 GP, 5.1 ppg, 3.1 rpg) gets the nod at center after being a key reserve on the championship team. Both can expect expanded roles in their senior campaigns. Sophomore Todd Fleming (22 GP, 1.3 ppg, 0.6 rpg) also has an opportunity for more playing time. Sophomore walk-on Anthony J. Green provides depth at both forward spots.
