Regionally ranked Falcons top SAPC in regular season finale

Conference tourney pairings announced

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Freshman Mariah Martinez (League City, Texas) had a five-point performance to lead No. 8 Southeast Region ranked Pfeiffer University to an impressive 6-0 Conference Carolinas women’s soccer victory at St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Falcons (11-5-1 Overall, 8-2-0 Conf.) concluded the regular season with five consecutive shutouts to finish with an imposing 7-1-1 record in the month of October. The Lady Knights (3-15-0, 3-7-0) were held scoreless for the fifth straight match heading into postseason play.

St. Andrews will return to the Conference Carolinas Tournament after a one year hiatus in 2009. The Knights, who were picked 10th in the preseason coaches poll, earned the eighth and final bid and will play at top-seeded Belmont Abbey College. Pfeiffer finished in a three-way tie for second place in the league standings and was awarded the No. 3 seed. The Falcons will host No. 6 Limestone College with both showdowns scheduled for 2 PM kickoffs of Monday.

Other quarterfinal pairings include No. 2 Queens University of Charlotte hosting No. 7 Erskine College and No. 4 Lees-McRae College entertaining No. 5 Mount Olive College. Those two tilts are slated for 7 PM starts.

Junior goalie Amanda Wemple (Hayden Lake, Idaho) only needed to make one save on a 20-yard strike by SAPC senior Becky Brandenburg (Swansboro, N.C.) in the 51st minute to preserve the Falcons sixth shutout. Pfeiffer has not allowed a goal for the last 527 minutes (almost nine hours) of game action, which is just four minutes off the Pfeiffer school record.

Martinez and senior Lindsey Godwin (Raleigh, N.C.) each scored two goals. Godwin put the Falcons ahead on the games first shot just 65 seconds into play off a series of passes from senior Megan Reaves (Mims, Fla.) and junior Megan Weston (Olathe, Kan.).  Martinez netted both of her goals in the final eight minutes of the first half to extend the Falcon advantage to three goals at halftime. The sophomore duo of Kaylie Lawing (Weston, Fla.) and Rachael Shapelow (Swan Point, Md.) provided the helpers on the two Martinez goals.

The Falcons added three more goals in the second half as Pfeiffer has outscored its opponents 24-0 in the squad’s last five trips to the pitch. Goodwin found the back twine for a second time in the 47th minute before senior Jessica Moulton (Huntingtown, Md.) and freshman Joi Chrishon (Fayetteville, N.C.) scored the Falcons final goals.

Junior Alyssa Wombwell added an assist as nine different Pfeiffer players notched points. Pfeiffer finished with a dominating 36-2 shot advantage and a 9-0 corner kick surplus.

Senior Becca Knott (Jacksonville, N.C.) had a busy day between the pipes for the Royal Blue and White, making 13 saves on 19 shots on goal.
