ROLLA, Mo. – Illinois-Springfield women’s basketball freshman Alyssa Palmer blew past previous career-high in points, as she tallied a game-best 14 in Saturday’s 60-46 loss to GLVC foe Missouri S&T.
UIS (3-3, 0-2) struggled to get anything going offensively in the first half, shooting just 23 percent from the field, while turning the ball over 14 times.
After falling down 10-4, the Prairie Stars were able to bounce back and tie the contest up at 10. Getting the run started for UIS was Palmer, who hit the front end of her two free throws.
However, after UIS tied the game, S&T (5-2, 2-0) closed the period by going on a 17-6 run. The Prairie Stars went nearly three minutes without a field during the closing minutes of the stanza until junior Cristina Nevins hit a jumper with two seconds remaining.
Opening the second half, UIS tried to crawl out of its hole by bringing the game within shouting distance (38-26). S&T, meanwhile, proceeded to go on a 14-6 run and took its advantage up to 20 with 7:47 to play.
One of the bright spots for UIS came with 4:17 to go, as the Prairie Stars closed the contest on an 11-0 run. The UIS defense forced three turnovers and held the Miners to 0-for-5 shooting during the final moments.
Individually for UIS, senior Paulina Pogorzelski scored 10 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman Mallory Beck also cleaned up the glass for UIS, as she pulled down seven boards.
The Prairie Stars next action is Tuesday when they travel to Oakland City (Ind.) for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
