Baudinet Drops 40 on UMass Lowell as Saint Anselm Cruises to 89-67 Win

Manchester, N.H. (December 4) -- Tying his career high, senior All-American candidate Thomas Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) scored 40 points on 15-of-18 shooting as Saint Anselm cruised to an 89-67 victory over UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon at Stoutenburgh Gym. Baudinet also scored 40 points in an overtime road win at Pace during the 2009-2010 season.

The Hawks held a 22-17 lead midway thru the first half and appeared to be in control with a 32-19 edge with 5:42 left in the period. The River Hawks cut the lead down to six with a 10-3 run however, before Saint Anselm took the 40-31 lead into the halftime break. Baudinet led the Hawks with 15 points at the break, while UML's Akeem Williams led all scorers with 16 points in the first half.

The two teams went back and forth over the first seven minutes of the second half and it was still just a nine-point game with 13:16 remaining. Two straight three-pointers from Baudinet quickly stretched that lead to 15 at 64-49 and the Hawks kept the pressure on. Baskets by John Mariano (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Baudinet, along with a deep three from senior Pat Luptowski (Keene, N.H.), turned things into a 20-point game with 9:50 still remaining.

The Saint Anselm lead rose as high as 24 points, helped by the final basket of the evening by Baudinet to make it an 86-63 lead with 2:51 left. With 2:16 left in the game, Baudinet left the game to a standing ovation after shooting a spectacular 10-for-11 from the field in the second half.

In addition to Baudinet's spectacular effort, Luptowski also finished in double figures with 12 points, with all of his scoring coming on three-pointers. Freshman Dino Mallios (Winthrop, Mass.) finished with seven assists in his second career start. Baudinet's performance was the first 40-point game at Stoutenburgh Gym by a Saint Anselm player since Jim Moore '06 scored 43 points vs. Saint Rose.

Williams led the River Hawks with 23 points, along with 10 points by Robbie Walton.

Saint Anselm now sits at 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Northeast-10, while UMass Lowell slips to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the league. The Hawks are back in action on Tuesday evening as the team travels to Saint Michael's for a 7:30 p.m. start at the Ross Sports Center.
