KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The University of Central Oklahoma outscored Texas A&M-Kingsville by 13 points over the final 12 minutes of the men’s basketball game on Saturday afternoon and that proved to be the winning margin in a 79-66 final at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
The Javelinas (3-5) battled with the eighth ranked Bronchos (8-1) for the first 28 minutes of the game using some excellent three-point shooting and solid defense. The Hoggies held the lead on two occasions at 19-18 and 40-39. Each time the Bronchos answered with a score to reclaim the lead.
Kingsville tied the game at 50-50 on a three-pointer by Philip Belford (Robstown/Tuloso-Midway HS) with 11:57 left in the game before UCO went on an 11-1 run and an 11-0 run in short succession to put the game away.
The Javelinas outscored the Bronchos 33-18 from behind the three-point arc, while UCO did their damage inside the paint scoring 40 points against only 16 for the Javs.
The Javelinas posted a season high with 11 three-pointers while connecting on 39.3 percent of their chances. They went 19-for-48 overall from the field and 17-for-27 at the foul line. Pierce Brooks (North Hills, CA/Sherman Oaks HS) led the team with a career high 14 points while knocking down a trio of three-pointers. Antwan Mullins (Katy/Cinco Ranch HS) and Mark Stevenson (South Bend, IN/R.J. Reynolds HS) scored 12 and 11 points, respectively. Belford came off the bench scoring 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range to tie a career high. Marcus Ford (Colorado Springs, CO/Mesa Ridge HS) led the defense with four steals and two blocks.
The Bronchos shot 61.9 percent from the field, made 6-of-14 three-point attempts and were 21-for-34 at the foul line. They were led by All-American Dauntae Williams who had 24 points, five boards, four assists and three steals. Tyler Phillips had 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists while Shane Carroll chipped in the 13 points. June Carter came off the bench to score 15 points, grab five rebounds and block two shots.
The Javelinas are back in action on Tuesday at Southwestern Oklahoma at 8 p.m.
