Three In Double Figures Leads UIS

SPRINGFIELD – Sophomore Jessica McConnell and senior Paulina Pogorzelski each had 14 points to lead the Illinois-Springfield women’s basketball team past Robert Morris-Springfield, 69-63, Monday night.

The Prairie Stars found themselves down by four early, but were able to build a comfortable lead over the Eagles. UIS was up just three (20-17), but 9-2 run gave the Prairie Stars a double digit lead with just under six minutes to play.

Near the end of the first half, RMU went on a 6-0 run after UIS got the lead up to 11, and brought the game within five. However, for the Prairie Stars, Pogorzelski was able to hit a lay-up at the buzzer to push her teams lead back to seven.

After the break, UIS quickly went up 19, with help from an 11-2 run. The defense for the Prairie Stars came up big during the stretch, as they caused eight turnovers and also held RMU scoreless for almost eight minutes.

UIS, meanwhile, would also go a cold spell, as it scored just 10 points in over eight minutes and saw the lead dip down to three. However, the Prairie Stars wouldn’t let the Eagles get any closer, as they closed the contest by scoring the last three points.

For the game, behind Pogorzelski and McConnell’s 14 points junior Bailey Beale added 12. Freshman Megan Bergerud also had a good game, as the Virginia, Ill., native scored nine points and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds in her debut

The Prairie Stars next action is Saturday at Lincoln (Mo.) with tip-off slated for 1:00 p.m.
