LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Slippery Rock University senior forward Maron Brown was named Monday as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division men's basketball "Athlete of the Week."
Brown, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound southpaw from Salisbury, Md. (Wicomico H.S.), earned the honor by scoring a season-high 28 points and grabbing 11 rebounds last Saturday in The Rock's 77-61 win at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia.
That "double-double" effort was his fourth in as many games this season and school-record 30th in his three-year Rock career and improved his season averages to 18.3 points and 11.8 rebounds per game.
Brown's point total last Saturday was one shy of his career-high mark set in the 2009-10 season finale at eventual NCAA Division II national runner-up Indiana (Pa.).
Brown's rebounds total last Saturday moved him into 15th place on SRU's career rebounding chart (572).
A preseason All-PSAC-West selection along with teammate Jabril Bailey (New Castle, Dela./Delcastle HS), Brown has led SRU to back-to-back wins over Ohio University Eastern and Chestnut Hill after The Rock dropped its first two games o the season.
The Rock, under the guidance of third-year head coach Kevin Reynolds, return to action Friday when they take on Dominican (N.Y.) in opening-day action of the Nyack College tournament in New York. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
SRU plays the event's host team, Nyack, at 4 p.m. the following day in the third of five straight road games.
SRU's next home game is Dec. 29 against Ohio University Eastern (3 p.m. tipoff). The following evening (7 p.m.), Grove City College comes to Morrow Field House for a backyard rivalry game.
