FLORENCE, SC – The Francis Marion University women’s basketball team will host the King College Lady Tornado on Friday afternoon (Nov. 26), while the FMU men’s squad will travel across the border to play in Wingate University’s OrthoCarolina Classic this weekend.
The women’s game will tip off at 4 p.m. in the Smith University Center. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students with FMU students being admitted free with a valid identification card.
Francis Marion and first-year head coach Kate Glusko are off to a 2-0 start behind the play of sophomore guard Courtney Mealing (24.5 ppg) and seniors Shannon Singleton-Bates (18.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg) and Robin Colbert (12.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 6.5 steals per game). With her 17-point performance on Tuesday against Morris College, Singleton-Bates moved into sole possession of 17th place on the Patriot career scoring list with 1,251 points.
King (1-4) is led by 5-10 senior forward Ashley Deans who is averaging 15.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
The unbeaten Patriot men (4-0) will face Shaw University (1-0) at 2 p.m. on Friday in the opening game of Wingate’s tournament. Wingate (1-2) will face Coker College (1-2) in the second game at 4 p.m. in the Bulldogs’ Cuddy Arena.
FMU will play at either 2 or 4 p.m. on Saturday depending on Friday’s results.
The Patriots are averaging 92.8 points per game with four players scoring in double figures: junior forward Liki Turner (19.0 ppg, 8.3 rpg), senior forward Simel Boyd (16.8 ppg, 8.3 rpg), freshman guard Evrik Gary (11.5 ppg), and junior point guard Shawn Greenfield (11.0 ppg, 4.5 assists per game).
Shaw defeated Mars Hill College 77-73 in its season opener as 6-2 senior point guard Raheem Smith tallied 26 points.
The Patriots and Bears have met three times previously with FMU claiming a memorable 122-108 win in Florence on Jan. 13, 1987, and Shaw winning a pair of games during the 1996-97 season.
Both Francis Marion squads will open Peach Belt Conference play on the road at USC Aiken on Wednesday night, Dec. 1.
