Merrimack Tabbed Tenth in NE-10 Preseason Coaches’ Poll

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The Merrimack women’s basketball team was selected to finish tenth in the Northeast-10 Conference in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Warriors owned a 12-17 overall record in 2009-10 with a 9-13 mark in the conference.

Merrimack finished 12th in the Northeast-10 Conference standings at the conclusion of last season. The Warriors fell to Bentley 88-77 in the quarterfinals of the conference playoffs.

Head coach Helen Williams is entering her fifth season at the reins of the Warriors. Williams added assistant coaches KJ Krasco and Amanda Shannon to her staff for the 2010-11 campaign. Shannon returns to her alma mater after a standout career with the Warriors from 2005-09.

Junior co-captain Genn Roy (Granby, Mass.) paced the Warriors last season with 14.7 points per game. Senior co-captain Sarah Benischek (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) pitched in 11.3 ppg while dishing out 98 assists. Kelly Schatzlein (Tolland, Conn.) is Merrimack’s top returning rebounder after pulling down 7.6 boards per contest a year ago.

Bentley was picked to finish atop the standings this season, garnering 14 first-place votes. Pace and Franklin Pierce each received a first-place vote. The Ravens were crowned the 2009-10 Northeast-10 Conference champions after compiling a 21-1 record in the league.

The Warriors open the 2010-11 season November 17 with a Northeast-10 Conference game at Bentley.
