MBB: Catawba falls 94-79 in exhibition with Athletes In Action

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba fell to Athletes In Action 94-79 in a men’s basketball exhibition game on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. Dean Hadley scored 17 points to lead four double-figure scorers for the victors. Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School) had a dozen points to pace the Catawba Indians.
Athletes In Action never trailed in posting the win and pulled away over the final five minutes. Catawba shot just 31% in the opening half and fell behind 41-31. The Indians had rallied from a 32-23 deficit to pull within a point before AIA ran off the final nine points of the half.

The visitors went up by 13 early in the second half, but Cameron Lovelace (Cherryville, NC/Cherryville HS/N. Florida) hit a pair of three-pointers in a 16-7 run the cut the margin to 55-51. AIA spurted back up by 15 at 73-58 with ten minutes remaining before another Catawba rally.

Freshman Keon Moore (Colerain, NC/Bertie HS) started the surge with a pair of three-pointers then a steal and jumper by Tomas Smogner (Stockholm, SWEDEN/Gangsatra) had the Indians within 73-69 with 6:39 left. AIA regained control from there using a 9-2 run to pull out to an 82-71 advantage with 4:52 remaining.

Ben Beran posted a double-double for AIA, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Luke Payne scored 13 points and dished out six assists, while John Vaudreiul tossed in 15 points and made three steals.

Justin Huntley (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) followed Reid with 11 points for the Tribe. Moore added 10 points and three steals. Lovelace and Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) each scored nine points for the Indians.

Catawba improved to 58% shooting in the second half, but were out-rebounded in the contest 40-28. AIA canned 67% in the second half and 58% for the game.
