Kane Receives ESU’s Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week

EAST STROUDSBURG – Michael Kane has been named this week’s Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week at East Stroudsburg University for his game-winning goal in overtime in the Warriors’ PSAC playoff-clinching win over Bloomsburg on Saturday night.

Kane (Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg), a redshirt senior, scored the game’s only goal with 1:38 left in the first overtime to send ESU to the PSAC tournament with the No. 2 seed. The Warriors host Millersville in the semifinals on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

On Tuesday, Kane was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team, along with redshirt senior midfielder Danny Drago and junior back Josh Arcona. ESU’s three selections were tied with Carnegie Mellon for the most in District II.

Kane has started 60 career games for the Warriors and was the sweeper and center back the last two seasons before moving to the midfield this year. He has five goals and two assists and scored two game-winning goals, both in overtime in PSAC victories over Bloomsburg (1-0) and Gannon (2-1).

He was first team All-PSAC East and third team NSCAA All-Region in 2009, and started all 22 games at sweeper on the 2008 NCAA Tournament team. He played in 20 games and made one start as a freshman in 2006 before missing the following season due to injury.

ESU is making its 23rd appearance in the PSAC playoffs in 29 seasons under head coach Jerry Sheska and has won 15 championships in that span, including back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007. The Warriors have won 19 PSAC men’s soccer championships in school history.
