PHOENIX, Ariz. — Dominican University of California rookie outside hitter Seluia "Ria" Falealili (Long Beach, CA/Otay Ranch HS) has been chosen the 2010 Pacific West Conference Freshman of the Year during a vote by the head coaches in the conference.
“It is an honor for the program that Ria has been named the PacWest Freshman of the Year,” said Dominican first-year Head Coach Gayle Stammer. “In a very tough conference, she has been a regular on the stat leader boards. We are very proud of her accomplishments.”
Even though Dominican finished the season at 3-26, Falealili made an impression on the coaches. The Freshman of the Year is currently fifth in the PacWest in points per game (3.54) and fourth in kills per game (3.14). She totaled 329.5 points on 292 kills, 22 service aces, seven block solos, and 17 block assists.
Falealili was named to the PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll four times during her freshman campaign.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by the conference and the coaches of the PacWest,” said Falealili. “It wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my coaches and teammates.”
Hawai‘i Hilo junior middle blocker Hillary-Lucy Hurley was named the 2010 Pacific West Conference Player of the Year while BYU-Hawaii Head Coach Wilfred Navalta was named the PacWest Coach of the Year for leading the Seasiders to a share of the conference title and a berth in the NCAA II National Championship Tournament.
