Decosimo and Cowie named October Sports Spot Student-Athletes of the Month

Brevard, N.C. - Alexis Decosimo and Tristan Cowie of the Brevard College Cycling team have been named the Sports Spot Brevard College Student-Athletes of the Month for the month of October as recognized on WSQL 1240 AM on Wednesday afternoon. The award is presented by Sports Spot in conjunction with the Brevard College Athletic Department.

Decosimo was voted the Female Student-Athlete of the month by the Brevard College Athletic Head Coaching staff over fellow nominees Alice Klochkova of the women’s golf team and Angela Canale of the cross country team.

Decosimo led the Tornados in seven events in the month of October, competing in the Short Track, Cross Country, Downhill and Dual Slalom events against the top riders in the nation. At Georgia Tech, Decosimo’s top finish was second in the Cross Country event and she reached the podium twice. At Nationals, Decosimo opened up with a podium finish in the Cross Country before sweeping past the field for the women’s Short Track National Championship. Decosimo competed in all four events, challenging for the overall omnium championship, finishing third overall in receiving the bronze medal.

Cowie was voted the Men’s Student-Athlete of the Month by the Brevard College Head Coaching Staff over fellow nominees Eric Watts of the football team and Jaime Villacis of the men’s soccer team.

Cowie also competed in seven events in the month of October, participating in the Cross Country, Short Track and Dual Slalom at Georgia Tech, and added the Downhill to his regimen at Nationals. At Georgia Tech, Cowie placed in the top 10 in all three events, with his top finish coming in Cross Country where he placed second overall. In Truckee, Calif. at Nationals, Cowie went for the men’s omnium championship, competing in all four events. He finished on the podium twice, receiving the silver medal in the Cross Country and Bronze in the Short Track on his way to winning the men’s Individual Omnium National Championship, the second Brevard rider to win an overall title and first men’s rider to achieve the feat.

These two athletes will be presented with action shots recognizing their award, which will be displayed in the lobby of Boshamer Gymnasium for the entire school year. A total of nine female and male Sports Spot Athletes of the Month will be selected in the 2010-2011 academic year. The award is selected from qualified candidates each month by the athletic department staff.
