Bulldogs advance to SAC semifinals with 3-2 OT thriller

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior midfielder Fabricio Barancoski (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored with 30 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give the top-seeded Bulldogs a 3-2 win over the eighth-seeded Tornados of Brevard College in first round action of the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer tournament Wednesday night. Wingate improves to 15-2 on the season and advances to the semifinals to take on Mars Hill College Friday at 6 p.m. Brevard falls to 3-15-1 on the year.

Wingate jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. Senior forward Jamie McKenna (Blackpool, England) netted his team-best 13th goal of the season in the 16th minute. Barancoski assisted on the goal, serving a cross from inside the box to the opposite corner. Junior forward Paulo Brunetto (Sao Paulo, Brazil) gave the ‘Dogs a 2-0 lead, scoring his third goal of the year with 58 seconds remaining in the first half.

The Tornados struck in the 70th minute, when freshman midfielder Jami Uuttu (Naantali, Finland) scored his third goal of the year from an assist by junior forward Jaime Villacis (Miami, Fla.). Brevard tied the game three minutes later, when sophomore defender Landon Reid (Shelby, N.C.) got behind the defense to score his second goal of the season. The Bulldogs had an opportunity to end it in the first overtime, but Barancoski’s line drive hit the crossbar.

Wingate was awarded a free kick from outside the box in the corner with under a minute remaining in the second overtime. Senior midfielder Luke Mulholland (Preston, England) served one right in front of the net and Barancoski headed home the game-winner to put the Bulldogs in the SAC semifinals. It is the eighth goal of the season for Barancoski. It is also Mulholland’s team-leading 10th assist on the season. The assist gives the two-time All-American 100 points in his Wingate career.

Wingate outshot Brevard 27-7 on the night, while holding a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) collected a pair of saves for the Bulldogs. Freshman goalkeeper Pauli Jussila (Valkeakoski, Finland) had four saves for the Tornados. Both net minders went the distance Tuesday.

The Bulldogs will take on the fifth-seeded Lions of Mars Hill College Friday at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C. (6 p.m. kick-off). Mars Hill edged Wingate 1-0 in the regular season, handing the Bulldogs their only conference loss of the year. The Lions also knocked Wingate out of the Food Lion SAC tournament in 2009.
