Hounds Handed Heartache

Albuquerque, N.M.- The Eastern New Mexico University Men’s Basketball team (0-2) traveled to University of New Mexico (1-0) for an exhibition match up, Wednesday Evening in the Pit at UNM in front of 13,921 people, only to fall to the strong Lobos 58-80.

The Lobos started out strong in front of their hometown crowd by notching the first bucket but the Gryhounds quickly responded with a layup from Tyler Jefferson. At the first media timeout, the Greyhounds presence was known with a 9-4 lead as Jefferson put up four points and a foul.

Before the second media timeout, the Hounds led 18-8 and improved from 4-7 to 8-14 from the field and increased their rebounds by three.

The well heated battle helped the Lobos with a 8-0 scoring run until Stefan Mirabal sank a three to bring it back to six point lead.

With 4:30 remaining in the first half, the UNM Lobos tied the lead for the first time. The Hounds defense was no comparison for the Lobo’s quick offense as a three pointer from Dairese Gary gave them the lead. Victor Reid answered right back two minutes later with a three from the baseline to tie the match. At the half, the Hounds trailed the Lobos 28-35

Starting the second half with a different outlook on the match, ENMU played more reserved but the Lobos started consistent. A fast break layup by Dairese Gary started the UNM drive. Unfortunately, the Hounds were only able to secure six rebounds six minutes into the half.

As the Lobos powered through the Eastern defense, Stefan Mirabal proved to be a point provider against the Division One University with 19 points, three rebounds, three assists and 31 minutes. At one point in the match, the Hounds led by as much as 12. Aaron Edwards assisted the baseline with 10 points and four rebounds.

Overall, the Hounds hit 21 field goals with 22 in the paint and 36 rebounds.

The Greyhounds take on New Mexico State University on Monday November, 8 at 7 P.M.
