WALTHAM, Mass. -- Bentley University freshman forward Lauren Battista (North Easton/Oliver Ames HS) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week following a strong showing in two games last week.
The six-footer, in a pair of conference wins, shot 62.5 percent and averaged 11 points, 5.5 rebounds, two assists, 1.5 steals and a block. On Sunday, she was seven of ten from the field and filled the stat sheet with a career-best 14 points, eight rebounds, three steals, two blocks and two assists.
Prior to scoring 14 against the Penmen, Battista had tallied eight points in each of her first three games as a collegian. She’s currently fourth on the team in scoring, with a 9.5 average, and is also producing 5.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals a game. Her field goal percentage of .533 ranks 12th in the Northeast-10.
Bentley, deemed the preseason favorite in the 16-team conference, has won three in a row, all against NE-10 opponents, after a season-opening loss to nationally-ranked Holy Family.
The conference’s weekly honor roll included Bentley senior forward Elise Caira (Wakefield/ Arlington Catholic HS), who averaged 14 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists during the 2-0 week. The team’s leading scorer (12.0 ppg) had a season-best 19 points and nine rebounds in a 72-48 win over Saint Anselm.
Bentley is back in action Wednesday night at UMass-Lowell (5:30 pm).
