Hillsdale, Mich. - For the 11th consecutive season, Grand Valley State is competing in the NCAA Tournament, as the #12 Lakers will travel to Hillsdale, Mich. for the 2010 Midwest Regional, beginning on Friday (Nov. 19). GVSU, the #2 seed in the eight-team tournament, takes on Northern Kentucky in the second quarterfinal match on Friday, facing the Norse at 2:30 p.m. at Hillsdale.
The Lakers have put together another superb season, recording a 23-6 overall record and a 17-2 mark in GLIAC play. Grand Valley State won its final 12 conference matches en route to winning the GLIAC North Division championship for the third time in the past four seasons. GVSU's six losses this season all came to teams ranked nationally in the latest AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) poll, while the Lakers have defeated #1 Concordia-St. Paul, #11 Lewis, #15 Northern Michigan, and #21 Northern Michigan during the season.
Grand Valley State ran off a 17-match winning streak from Sept. 26 to Nov. 13, marking the sixth-longest win streak in program history. In the GLIAC Tournament, GVSU won its opening round match at home against Northwood by a 3-1 score and upended Northern Michigan by the same 3-1 final. The Lakers fell, 3-2, to #9 Hillsdale on the Chargers' home court last Sunday (Nov. 14) in a five-set battle that resulted in a 15-12 fifth set final score.
GVSU now turns its attention to the Midwest Regional Tournament, which the Lakers have dominated over the past 10 seasons. Grand Valley State is 21-4 all-time in regional play and owns a 20-3 record since 2000. The Lakers have captured seven regional championships (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008) in the school's history.
On Oct. 15 at the GLVC-GLIAC Crossover, the Lakers met up with their opponent on Friday, Northern Kentucky, defeating the Norse by a 3-0 score. GVSU is 3-0 all-time in the NCAA Tournament against Northern Kentucky, having defeated the Norse in 2000 (3-2), 2001 (3-1), and 2003 (3-0). Against the seven teams in the Midwest Regional Tournament, GVSU is 4-3 this season. The Lakers are 1-0 against both Northern Kentucky and Lewis, 2-1 against Northern Michigan, and 0-2 against Hillsdale. Grand Valley State has not faced Indianapolis, Missouri-St. Louis, or Southern Indiana this season.
