Belmont Abbey Men's Soccer edged by Limestone 1-0

The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team wrapped up the 2010 regular season with a 1-0 loss to the visiting Limestone Saints this afternoon at Alumni Field. Limestone moves to 11-6 overall and 7-2 in Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey, which had its four match winning streak snapped, falls to 10-6-2 overall and 6-2-1 in Conference Carolinas.

Belmont Abbey outshot Limestone 14-12, but the Saints scored the only goal of the match in the 11th minute. Junior Ellis ran down a long pass and zoomed down the right side and fired a shot from the top corner of the box into the far post for the goal.

The Crusaders had plenty of chances to even the match, mostly in the second half. In the 68th minute Ross Smith fired a shot from six yards out that H.B. Lockwood swatted away, and again in the 84th minute, Lockwood stopped an attempt by Stuart Kirk.

Lockwood made four saves, while Louis Liberatore collected two. Limestone finished with six corner kicks to five for the Abbey.

Belmont Abbey will be the fourth-seed in next week's Conference Carolinas Tournament. The Crusaders will host either Coker or Pfeiffer Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
