Bakal, Lamming Score as Tritons Cruise to 2-0 Victory at Cal State East Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. – David Bakal and Gavin Lamming scored as the UC San Diego men’s soccer team took a 2-0 victory on the road over Cal State East Bay in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Friday night in Hayward.

The win stopped a two-match losing skid for the Tritons, as they improve to 7-6-4 overall and 7-5-3 in CCAA play. The Pioneers fall to 2-14-3 overall and are now just 1-11-3 in conference competition.

Playing in his first minutes of the season, senior Tyler Zupan found an open Bakal with a cross in the 14th minute, allowing the defender to get his head to it and flick the ball high into the far post for the game’s opening goal. It marked just the second goal of the year for Bakal, who also scored on a header in the waning seconds against Chico State on Oct. 15 to prolong that match. Brandon Yee would go on to fire three more shots on goal in the first half, however, none would beat the CSUEB keeper.

Lamming would provide the insurance goal within the first ten minutes of the second half, sending a shot into the lower left corner of the net on a pass from Alec Arsht. Having started nine matches so far on the season, the strike marked the first time Lamming has scored this year.

After going unbeaten between Sept. 24 and Oct. 17, a span of eight matches, UCSD found itself in position for fourth place in the CCAA point standings going into its competitions at Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona last weekend. The Tritons would drop both contests against the Coyotes and Broncos, giving them a slim chance at making the postseason going into Friday night.

Moreover, as Cal State Dominguez Hills and Sonoma State found ways to victory on Friday night, UCSD’s chances at the CCAA postseason tournament faded. With only one match remaining in its regular season, UCSD trails CSUDH and SSU by five and four points, respectively, making it mathematically impossible for the Tritons to make the postseason tournament, even with a win over CSUEB on Sunday.

UCSD’s final contest of the regular season will be on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 11:30 a.m. Prior to the match, seniors Bakal, Zupan, Yee, Josh Jackson, Shane Micheil, Jared Kukura and Kasra Sarabakhsh will be honored for their years of service to the team.
