LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's volleyball team won its seventh match in row on Friday, defeating visiting Cal State Stanislaus 3-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play at RIMAC Arena. Set scores were 25-20, 25-23, 22-25 and 25-19 in favor of the Tritons.
UCSD, which moved up to No. 4 in the West Region in this week's NCAA Regional poll, improves to 14-7 overall with the win and 11-6 in CCAA play. Winners of nine of their last 10, the Tritons remain one game behind second place Cal State East Bay in the league standings.
The Pioneers defeated Chico State 3-2 on Friday night.
Roxanne Brunsting finished with 14 kills, 21 assists and eight digs to pace the Tritons, who hit .238 as a team for the match. Hillary Williamson recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs, as did Katie Condon, who finished with 12 kills and 10 digs. Janessa Werhane scooped up a match-high 24 digs, while Thalia McCann finished with 28 assists.
Lianne Vicchio sent down 14 kills and finished with 14 digs for Cal State Stanislaus (11-11, 8-9 CCAA), while Eva Chafeh totaled 11 kills and Melissa Bishop chipped in with 10.
The Warriors hit just .127 for the match, including a woeful .000 in the fourth and final set.
The Tritons took a 13-10 lead in the opening set on back-to-back kills by Brunsting and Cara Simonsen and four consecutive Stanislaus errors led to an 18-15 UCSD advantage. The Warriors closed to within 20-18 on a Chafeh kill, but Williamson and Simonsen answered with big swings to push the lead to 22-18. A Brunsting kill moments later sealed the 25-20 set one victory, with UCSD hitting at .324 clip in the frame.
The second stanza was tight early on, as well. With the visitors leading 16-14 following a Williamson attack error, the Tritons proceeded to score seven of the next eight points to seize control. A kill by Kaitlin Potter and a Vicchio attack error gave UCSD a 21-17 cushion. The Warriors would climb back to within 24-23 to force a UCSD timeout, but Williamson came through with the final kill on the ensuing play to give the Tritons the 2-0 match lead.
Cal State Stanislaus found its form in the third set, hitting .225 en route to the 25-22 victory. With the score tied at seven, the Warriors used a 7-1 run to build a 15-9 lead. UCSD would get as close as one at 22-21, forcing the Warriors into a timeout, but Bishop answered with a kill and Brunsting was called for an error to make it 24-21 in favor of the visitors. Kaycee Gow's kill finished it off, as Stanislaus got on the board.
UCSD led 9-6 early in the fourth set, but CSUS scored five straight to take an 11-9 advantage. The Tritons would answer with a 7-0 run of their own for a 16-11 cushion and three straight Warrior errors made it 22-15 in favor of UCSD. Kills by Andrea Fett and Chafeh and a Williamson miscue gave Stanislaus life, but Williamson and Condon followed with kills to put the exclamation point on the UCSD victory, 25-19.
The Tritons will now take on Chico State Saturday night in their final home appearance of the regular season. Seniors Audrey Green, Kaitlin Potter, Alanna Rutan and Cara Simonsen will be honored in a special ceremony prior to the match.
