Gannon Volleyball drops Five-Set Thriller to California (Pa.)

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon volleyball team played one of the most exciting matches of the season at the Hammermill Center Friday night. Unfortunately the Lady Knights were unable to come up with the win, falling in five sets to California (Pa.) by scores of 15-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-15 and 17-15.

Gannon was firing on all cylinders in the first set, leading by a 16-6 margin at one point. Claren Harris (South Milwaukee, Wis. / South Milwaukee) ended the set on a kill after setting up set point on a block of a Vulcan attack.

Cal found it’s offense in the second set, recording 12 kills to Gannon’s 7. The Vulcans rolled off six straight points behind the serve of Kelly Fromknecht to go ahead 14-22. A Kendall Fischer (Macedonia, Ohio / Nordonia) ace and another block from Harris swung the momentum back towards the Lady Knights side, but the lead was too much to overcome as California took the second set 18-25.

A closely contested third set, featured a tie score 13 times, but Gannon was able to pull away in the end thanks to a pair of Lauren Sazama (St. Louis, Mo. / Oakville) kills.

California (Pa.) took the fourth set, as Gannon struggled to gain an offensive rhythm. In the exciting fifth set, Gannon forced California to match point twice, but was unable to come away with the win as the Vulcans won 17-15.

Sazama led the offense with 23 kills, hitting .207 for the match. The sophomore also finished second on the team in digs.

Alex DelPiombo (Monroe, Mich. / St. Mary's Catholic Central) recorded 39 aces in the match while Jess Saunders (Hinckley, Ohio / Highland) led the team in digs with 21.

California (Pa.) had five players record at least nine of the team’s 60 kills, as they hit .210 for the match.

Gannon falls to 17-8 this season and 10-6 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matches while California is now 19-10 and 14-3 in conference.

Gannon will play another home match tomorrow against Indiana (Pa.) at 7 p.m.
