SAVANNAH, Ga. - Valdosta State set an Alumni Arena scoring record by a single team as the Blazers defeated Hiwassee 125-84 in the final day of play at the Hampton Inn and Suites Fall Finals Classic Saturday afternoon.
Seven Blazers scored in double figures, led by Christian Hunter who hit 7-of-10 shots, including 4-of-5 threes, to finish with 18 points. Kevin Harris added 15 while Billy McShepard and Will Alston scored 14 each. Paul Hagler contributed 13 while Tristan Steele added 11 as Valdosta State (10-2) shot 61.1 percent from the floor in the game.
VSU was never challenged in the game as the Blazers scored the first five points of the game and raced out to a 18-4 advantage less than five minutes into the game. Hiwassee (2-10) got no close than 10 points the rest of the way as the Valdosta State advantage hit 20 points just over 10 minutes into the contest.
The Blazer lead reached as high as 27 points during the first 20 minutes of play before settling at 63-38 at the intermission.
Valdosta State shot 68.8 percent from the floor in the first half, hitting 22-of-32 shots. Alston scored all 14 of his points in the first half while Hunter contributed 13 and Harris 11.
Valdosta State's lead got no lower than 22 points in the second half as it topped the 30-point barrier seven minutes into the frame. A Sidney Harris jumper with 6:18 to play pushed the VSU advantage to 40.
The Blazers dished out 23 assists in the game, led by nine by Martrez Scott and owned a 45-30 advantage in rebounding in the game. In addition to connecting on 44-of-72 field goals, including 10-of-17 threes, VSU also hit 27-of-34 free throws, blocked eight shots, including four by Josh Sparks, and had nine steals.
Four Hiwassee players scored in double figures, led by Zack Williams with 23. LaZerick Boyd added 21 and Adrian McLaurin 20 while Javarious Williams tallied 11. The Tigers shot 40.3 percent from the field in the contest, but were hampered by 17 turnovers.
Valdosta State takes a break for the next 12 days before returning to action December 30 against Wilmington in Pensacola, Fla. The game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. Eastern tip.
