No. 22 Merrimack Stymied by Southern N.H., 87-75

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- Hours after returning to the NABC National Poll, the No. 22 Merrimack men’s basketball team suffered an 87-75 loss to Southern N.H. Wednesday evening at the Volpe Gym. The Warriors fall to 6-2 on the year and 2-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the loss. The Penmen move to 3-5 overall and claimed their first league win of the year to improve to 1-5 in the conference.

For the fourth time this season, Roland Davis (Deer Park, N.Y.) set a new career-mark for points with 33 on the night. Aaron Strothers (Wareham, Mass.) earned his second double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Dee Mency (Hagerstown, Md.) and Tyler Young (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each poured in 10 points.

The two teams traded buckets in the first five minutes of action. The visitors pushed out to a 12-point lead midway through the opening half. The Penmen strung together a 10-2 run to take a 25-47 advantage with three minutes remaining. Merrimack closed out the first half with a 9-3 run of its own and trailed at the half 50-36.

Davis paced the Warriors with 14 points at the break while Strothers and Young each contributed eight in the first frame. Merrimack shot 48% from the floor while Southern N.H. owned a 57% field goal percentage after the opening 20 minutes of play.

Southern N.H. kept its distance ahead of Merrimack in the second half. The Warriors pulled within nine with 7:32 left to play on a layup by Davis. Wayne Mack (Paterson, N.J.) forced a turnover off of an inbound pass in the Warriors offensive end. Davis netted a layup on Merrimack’s ensuing possession.

The Warriors shot 46% from the field in the game while the Penmen connected on 54% of their field goal attempts. Southern N.H. finished the contest with a 44% three point percentage while Merrimack was 39% from long distance. The home team missed just one free throw all game, converting on 10-of-11 attempts from the charity stripe.

Merrimack owned a slight advantage over the visitors on the boards, 35-34.

The Penmen were led by Josh Morgan-Green with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, including 5-of-7 from three-point range.

Merrimack returns to the hardwood December 11 as it travels to local rival UMass Lowell. The Warriors and River Hawks will meet in the first-ever NCAA Division II basketball game played Tsongas Arena.
