Lisa Carlsen improves to 4-0 in GLVC openers as Lewis head coach
ST. LOUIS – Women’s basketball opened the conference slate by defeating Maryville 77-56 at Maloney Arena on Thursday evening. Senior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) drained a career-high six 3-pointers to finish with 18 points.
Lewis took a lead as large as 12 in the opening half even though senior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) scored just three points in the frame. Turpel turned it on in the second, scoring 17, to finish with 20 points for the game. She also totaled 10 rebounds and four assists to earn her second double-double of the year.
“Jen got on track in the second half by letting the game come to her,” head coach Lisa Carlsen said. “She took what was given to her.”
The Flyers quickly extended their nine-point halftime lead to 15 less than four minutes into the half after a layup by sophomore Sam Rinehart (Marion, Iowa/Marion). The Flyers never looked back from there.
“We did a better job in the second half of taking care of the basketball and limiting their second chance points,” Carlsen said.
Senior Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) scored 15 points and tied a career-high with nine assists. Rinehart tallied 11 points.
Lewis shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57) from the floor while limiting Maryville to 33.3 percent (20-of-60) shooting. The Flyers scored 25 points off 19 Maryville turnovers.
Lewis improves to 4-3 (1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference). Maryville falls to 2-3 (0-1 GLVC). The Flyers don’t travel far for their next contest, taking on Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday at 1 p.m.
