PENSACOLA, Fla. – Jade Howard scored a career-high 20 points as the University of West Florida women’s basketball team won a tight battle over Eckerd College, 75-69, Friday night in the second game of the 2010 Highpointe Hotel Corporation Classic. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for UWF and sends the Argonauts back over .500, at 4-3.
Howard’s 20-point effort was the most scored by a UWF player this season. The Salyersville, Ky., native was 7-for-9 from the floor and connected on all three of her three-point field goal attempts.
Also producing a fine effort was Octavia Bearden. The junior posted her third double-double of the season, with 18 points and ten rebounds.
Eckerd (4-2) was led by Krystal Charles. The London native had scored just 16 points in her first five games this season but scored 24 points and added nine rebounds in the losing effort.
Things looked bleak in the early going for Shannan Bergen’s team. After scoring the first basket of the game, the Argos surrendered a 9-0 run. Taylor Young found the net on a three-pointer, capping the Eckerd breakout and giving the Tritons a 9-2 lead with 17:06 left in the 1st half.
The Tritons took their largest lead at the 15:14 mark, when Young assisted Charles on a lay-up, making the score 13-5.
Eckerd led for 16:29 of the 1st half, but the Argonauts rallied to tie the game at 23-all when Bearden sank two free throws 2:12 before the halftime whistle. Later, the Tylertown, Miss., native evened the score at 30-30 with the final points of the opening half.
UWF came out firing in the 2nd stanza, scoring six of the first seven points. Again it was Bearden who provided the muscle, powering home a bucket with 17:34 on the clock to make the score 36-31.
In a reversal of the opening period, West Florida would go on to lead for a 12-minute stretch in the second half. But the Tritons pulled even with 7:09 left, as Young rained down a three-pointer to tie the game at 57-57.
The Argos responded with an 8-0 run to take their biggest lead of the game. Howard started the rally with a three-ball and finished it with a three-point play to make the score 65-57 with 5:11 to go.
Eckerd had one more rally in them, cutting the deficit to 65-64 on a pair of free throws by Katie Rausberg. But seconds later, Charles would foul out of the game, leaving Eckerd without their top offensive threat and swinging momentum back to UWF. The Argonauts would go on to finish the game on a 10-5 run and win their fourth game of the year.
Sher’Ryan Scott had her second straight 12-point outing for the Argonauts, while Jessica Young added nine points and eight boards. West Florida shot 49.1% from the field and 55.6% from long range, a season-high.
Eckerd shot 52.0% on the night. Tijana Brdar scored 13 points for the Tritons, and Rausberg added 11.
UWF looks to continue their fine play on Saturday, when they host undefeated Columbus State. The Argonauts and Cougars will do battle at 4 pm at the UWF Field House.
