DURANT, OKLAHOMA – The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s basketball team picked up their first road victory of the season on Tuesday night at Southeastern Oklahoma on Tuesday night, 56-51.
Junior guard Mark Stevenson (South Bend, IN/R.J. Reynolds HS) led the Javelinas (4-6) with 14 points, including a three-pointer and a three-point play in the final 2:45 of the game to keep the team in the lead late in the game. It was still a three-point game with seven seconds remaining when Ricky Simon (Lamarque/Lamarque HS) knocked down a pair of free throws to ice the game.
The Javelinas shot 38.8 percent from the field, made 8-of-24 three-pointers and were 10-for-16 at the foul line. Philip Belford (Robstown/Tuloso-Midway HS) came off the bench to score nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from three-point range in only 14 minutes of action. Marcus Ford (Colorado Springs, CO/Mesa Ridge HS) led the team with eight rebounds.
The Savage Storm (1-7) shot 42.5 percent from the field, made 3-of-12 from three-point range and was 14-for-21 at the foul line. Jamell Cormier led the team with 15 points, six rebounds and three steals. Josh Delfino added 10 points off the bench. Chibuzo Elonu led the team with seven rebounds and went 8-for-8 from the foul line.
The Javelinas pulled down six more rebounds than the Storm and forced 16 turnovers while committing 14.
The Javelinas are off until December 18 when they host Southwestern Oklahoma at 3 p.m.
