GLVC Schedule Opens Thursday

SPRINGFIELD – After matching last year’s win total with a victory Monday night, the Illinois-Springfield women’s basketball team looks for its first Great Lakes Valley Conference ‘W’ Thursday evening at Drury.

The Prairie Stars shot a blistering 63 percent from the field in the first half Monday, which was the highest percentage under head coach Marne Fauser. In the game, freshman Megan Bergerud scored a career-high 18 points and classmate Mallory Beck pulled down a career-best 10 rebounds.

For the season, UIS is led offensively by Paulina Pogorzelski, who averages 13 points a game, while Bergerud leads the Prairie Stars with 7.5 rebounds per contest. Also on defense, Pogorzelski and junior Alex Blair lead UIS with seven and five blocks respectively.

Drury comes into Thursday’s game 2-4 and has dropped three of its last four. During the Panthers three straight losses they averaged just 59 points a game, while giving up 65. Thursday will also be the Panthers first of three straight games at home before six consecutive on the road.

Leading Drury on offense is Ja’Nell Jones, who is scoring 18.3 points per game, while also pulling down six rebounds. The Panthers are shooting just 28 percent from outside and average 17 turnovers a game.

Saturday’s opponent, Missouri S&T is 3-2 this season, but had lost two straight before winning last Saturday against Westminster.

This season for the Miners, Julie Meyer is leading the team with 12.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. As a team, S&T is shooting 44 percent from the floor, but is just connecting on 62 percent of its free throws.
