ATLANTA, Ga. – University of West Florida senior volleyball player Chelsea Wilhoite was named one of 18 semifinalists for the 7th Annual Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup, it was announced today. Of the 18 semifinalists, Wilhoite was one of just three volleyball student-athletes and one of just five athletes from non-NCAA Division I institutions.
Wilhoite did not make the second cut, which includes five finalists. The Cup will be presented in Atlanta in early 2011.
The Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup is named after John Wooden, the revered former basketball coach of UCLA who passed away in June. The Cup is presented by the Athletes for a Better World foundation. All aspects of The Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup are managed by the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup Committee, chaired by former University of Georgia Athletic Director Vincent Dooley and composed of selected members of the National Board, the Athletic Advisory Board, and other special members.
In order to be nominated for the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup, the athlete must exemplify the values of ABW’s Athletic Code of Living:
Train with a disciplined, consistent work ethic
Demonstrate fair play and sportsmanship
Develop positive supportive relationships with teammates and coaches
Win or lose with grace and dignity
Contribute significantly to society through the gifts of time or money
Wilhoite finished her UWF career as a three-time All-Gulf South Conference honoree and the 2010 GSC Tournament Most Outstanding Player. She is one of just two Argonauts to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career.
