INDIANAPOLIS --- The Tusculum College volleyball team has earned an at-large berth to the 2010 NCAA Division II Tournament announced officials Sunday night with the unveiling of the 64-team, single-elimination field.
The Pioneers (25-6) will be the No. 3 seed in this year’s Southeast Regional and will face sixth seeded Carson-Newman College in a regional quarterfinal match. The eight-team Southeast Regional will be held at Cuddy Arena and hosted by Wingate University in Wingate, N.C. Match times and dates will be announced on Monday.
Host Wingate is the top seed and will open against No. 8 seed Lees-McRae College. Lincoln Memorial University is the No. 4 seed and will take on fifth-seeded University of Montevallo in a quarterfinal match-up. Flagler College is the second seed and will face No. 7 seed Armstrong Atlantic State University.
The Tusculum/Carson-Newman winner will advance to the semifinal round and will face the winner of the Flagler/Armstrong Atlantic match.
Tusculum is enjoying its finest season since becoming a NCAA Division II member (since 1998). The Pioneers posted a 16-2 record in the South Atlantic Conference to finish second in the league standings. Tusculum advanced to the championship match of the Food Lion SAC Tournament for the first time in school history.
Tusculum swept the two regular season meetings against the Lady Eagles winning 3-1 in Greeneville on Sept. 14 and followed with another four-set win in Jefferson City on Oct. 26.
