THREE GOLDEN SUNS NAMED DAKTRONICS ALL-SOUTH REGION VOLLEYBALL SELECTIONS, SARAH VON LIENEN NAMED FIRST-TEAM ALL-REGION HONOREE

RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – Three Arkansas Tech Golden Sun Volleyball players picked up some more postseason honors on Wednesday as senior middle blocker Sarah Von Lienen (Lakeland, Tenn.), senior setter Kera Dukic (White Lake, Mich.) and junior outside hitter Laura Farney (Morton, Ill.) were named to the Daktronics All-South Region Volleyball Teams.

It marked the third straight season that Tech has had representation on the Daktronics All-South Region Team and the first time in school’s volleyball history that the Golden Suns have had three players selected All-Region honorees.

Von Lienen was named a First-Team All-Region selection after being a Second-Team selection in both 2008 and 2009, while Dukic and Farney earned Second-Team honors after helping lead Tech to a 31-5 overall record, a second round berth in the Gulf South Conference Tournament and its second GSC West Division title in the last three years.

The Daktronics All-South Region Teams were voted on by the Sports Information Directors at all the schools in the South Region. In addition, the SIDs at their respective South Region schools were responsible for nominating the student-athletes. All First-Team All-Region selections advance on to Daktronics All-America Team ballot, which will be released on December 2.

In addition to Tech’s three player contingent, the GSC had five other players selected All-Region as Southern Arkansas senior middle hitter Maggie Glover, North Alabama senior middle hitter Sarah Roberts, West Florida senior outside hitter Chelsea Wilhoite, West Florida senior outside hitter Katie Johnson and West Florida sophomore libero all earned Second-Team accolades. Roberts was a Second-Team Daktronics All-South Region honoree last season.

“Sarah, Kera and Laura all had tremendous seasons for our team and it is nice to see them recognized for all their hard work and accomplishments,” Tech Head Volleyball Coach Kristy Bayer said. “All three of them were a big reason for our success we had this past season.”

Von Lienen, who was named the GSC West Division Player of the Year and was named a First-Team All-GSC West Division selection for the third consecutive season, moved up to the All-South Region First Team this season at middle hitter/blocker after leading the Golden Suns in kills (406), kills per set (3.76) and blocks (91) and she also hit .341 in 108 sets played. On the season, Von Lienen was named a GSC West Division Player of the Week three times and earned 14th weekly Player of the Week honors from the league in four-year Golden Sun career. She finished her career standing four on the school’s all-time kill chart (1,436), second on the career hitting percentage chart (.317) and second on the school’s Division II era chart (477). In addition, Von Lienen, who was named to the GSC All-Tournament Team this year, is fifth on the school’s career block chart and finished third in career double-figure kill matches with 73 and had eight career 20-plus kill matches, including recording 20 kills in Tech’s four-set loss to North Alabama in the GSC Tournament semifinals.

Dukic, who was named a two-time All-GSC West Division selection, including being a First-Team honoree this past season, earns her first All-South Region accolade after recording 1,256 assists, which was second-best in the GSC and eighth-best on the school’s single-season list. On the season, Dukic recorded four double-doubles and had 50 or more assists in four matches. She closed out her four-year Golden Sun career fourth on the school’s all-time assists chart with 2,693 and her 11.1 assists per set average this season is third on the school’s single-season list. In addition, Dukic is one of only four Tech setters to ever record more than 2,000 career assists and 700 career digs. Dukic finished her career with 731 digs all-time.

Farney, who has been named a First-Team All-GSC West Division selection the past two seasons, earns her Second-Team All-South Region accolade after finishing second on the team in kills (349), kills per set (3.09), digs (345) and third in blocks (50). This past season, Farney, who was named a four-time GSC West Division Player of the Week honoree, including earning Offensive Player of the Week honors on three successive weeks, lead Tech with 14 double-doubles and has had 27 in her three-year tenure as a Golden Sun. In addition, she is just nine kills shy of becoming the 13th Tech player to eclipse the 1,000 career kill plateau as she has recorded 991 career kills.

Von Lienen is joined on the Daktronics All-South Region First Team by Tampa senior setter Meghan Sherman, Tampa sophomore middle hitter Danielle Selkridge, Barry University senior outside hitter Julie Teixeria, Tampa senior outside hitter Melissa Vanderhall, Rollins College senior outside hitter Sarah Mendoza and Rollins College junior libero Phoebe Corder, who was a Second-Team All-Region honoree as freshman in 2008.

In addition to selecting an All-South Region Team, the SIDs also voted on a Player of the Year and this year’s Daktronics All-South Region Player of the Year is Teixeria.
