Saint Michael's Men's Basketball To Tip-Off Regular Season This Weekend

COLCHESTER, Vt. - A new era of Saint Michael's College men's basketball begins this weekend, as the Purple Knights open the 2010-11 regular season at the Stonehill College Tip-Off Classic.

Saint Michael's will begin the tournament with a 5 p.m. contest versus C.W. Post, and complete play at the Classic on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game against Caldwell.

All games at the Stonehill Tip-Off Classic can be seen live at http://www.stonehillskyhawks.tv/, or can be viewed through Live Stats at http://livestats.prestosports.com/stonehill/.

The games mark the Saint Michael's regular-season head coaching debut of Michael Harding, who was hired in April and replaces the winningest coach in program history, Tom O'Shea. Harding, the top assistant coach at Stonehill the previous five seasons, made his first appearance on the Purple Knights' sideline in a 69-60 loss at NCAA Division I University of Vermont last Saturday.

Ironically, half of Harding's first six regular-season games as Saint Michael's head coach will be at his previous employer, as the Purple Knights play at Stonehill on November 28, in addition to both games this weekend.

Saint Michael's returns seven players from last year's squad, including three of its top four scorers: senior tri-captain Nate Birr (Burnsville, Minn./Saint Thomas Academy), junior Tyler Schilling (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka), and sophomore Travis Warech (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville).

The Purple Knights begin Northeast-10 Conference play at the defending league tournament champions, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., and play their home opener against non-conference rival Concordia College (N.Y.) on Saturday, November 20 at 2 p.m. at the Ross Sports Center.
