Manchester, N.H. -- Led by four players in double figures, the Saint Anselm women's basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 53-45 victory over Southern New Hampshire on Wednesday night at Stoutenburgh Gym. This is the first 3-0 start for the Hawks since the 2002-2003 season.
The first half started slowly and it was the Penmen who built a 19-13 lead with 5:20 remaining in the period. Saint Anselm scored the remaining four points of the period though on baskets by Jen Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.) and Morgan Frame (Waterville, Maine) for the 19-17 margin at the halftime break.
Saint Anselm came out firing to start the second half and with a 14-4 lead over the first 3:55 of the period, the Hawks turned the deficit into a 31-23 lead with 16:05 on the clock. The Hawks were helped by seven second-half rebounds from junior Megan Howard (St. Paul, Minn.), who finished with a 10-point, 14-rebound double-double. The double-double is her second of the season and the 26th of her career. The Penmen closed to within three at 42-39 after a layup from Megan Spanarkel (Tinton Falls, N.J.), but the Hawks held off the rally for the victory.
Frame led the Hawks with 14 pointts on 6-for-9 shooting from the field, along with 11 points from Gureckis and 10 points each from Howard and junior Epiphany Smith (Springdale, Ark.). Megan Smith (Smithfield, Maine) led the Penmen with 17 points.
Saint Anselm improves to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Northeast-10, while the Penmen are 1-1 overall and 0-1 in league play. The Hawks are back in action Saturday afternoon, hosting Felician for a non-conference start beginning at 2 p.m. at Al Grenert Court at Stoutenburgh Gym.
